  • The droppings of rats can cause Leptospirosis or Salmonellosis. Rats and mice are the most commonly known nuisance worldwide. They also chew, and can destroy electrical wires and pretty much anything they get their teeth on.

Raccoons & Opossums

  • Raccoons and Opossums are two of the most commonly dealt with wild animal nuisances. They are very similar in their living and eating habits. Both have adapted to living with humans, and have learned that garbage cans and dumpsters are excellent sources of food.
  • A mother raccoon will often tear a hole in a roof to access the attic, where she will make quite a mess and a lot of noise. Once inside the attic, raccoons often tear off insulation paper, open ducts, tear insulation off pipes, etc. Opossums don’t, however cause as much structural damage as raccoons. Both raccoons and opossums will often break into a screened-in porch to get pet food.
  • Raccoons carry a number of parasites and diseases that can affect people or pets; they are a common carrier of rabies, a potentially fatal disease. They also carry canine distemper, which can kill your dog. Their feces may contain raccoon roundworm, the spores of which humans can breathe in and become seriously infected by, so it is important to capture raccoons using human habitat.
  • Opossums do not carry rabies due to their lower than usual body temperature being too low; they do however carry a large amount of parasites and thus are vectors for the diseases that fleas, ticks, etc. can transmit. They also leave a lot of droppings, which pose the usual excrement health risks, such as leptospirosis or Salmonella.

Squirrel Removal

  • Squirrels are cute little wild animals that are most active in morning and evening, and eat mostly nuts and seeds. They live in a variety of habitats, both forest and suburban areas.
  • Squirrels love to live in attics, they also love to chew, and will chew on houses; or wires, ducts, and pipes once inside an attic. If squirrels chew on electrical wires in an attic, it can create a real potential fire hazard.
  • Squirrels also bring in nesting material and leave urine and feces in the attic. They carry no real important diseases, though they do carry parasites, and thus are vectors for the diseases that flea, ticks, etc. can transmit.
  • They also leave a lot of droppings, which pose the usual excrement health risks, such as leptospirosis or Salmonella.

Snake Removal

  • The primary concern seems to be fear of snakes (Ophidiophobia) which many people have, it’s a common phobia, and we’ve seen it many times. It’s irrational, but very real for some people. Even for those without a flat-out phobia, snakes are often unsettling. Often it’s just a matter of ignorance – people don’t know which snakes are venomous and which are not, so they are naturally cautious around all snakes.
  • Snakes inhabit many ecological niches, and often around human buildings. They’ll get into pools, screened porches, and oftentimes, the home itself. Snakes don’t need much space to enter a home. One myth about snakes is that if a snake has a triangular head, it is poisonous (venomous). This is not true – most snakes have triangular heads. As reptiles, their body temperature is regulated by surrounding temperatures.
  • Sometimes they’ll sunbathe to raise temperature. Many snakes usually prefer to hide under heavy cover in cool areas. The important thing to know is that most snakes are non-venomous, and pretty much none of them are aggressive. Most will run, and some will stand their ground, but if you leave the snake alone, it’ll leave you alone.
  • Snakes live in a wide variety of habitats. Some are great climbers, some are aquatic. Most are very patient when it comes to catching prey – they sit still and silent for a very long time, then when a prey item is in reach, they strike! Some kill by venom, some by constriction. Some just grab bugs and eat them.

Feral Cat Control

  • Feral cats can spread disease and parasites, and make a stink with their mating spray, and alarming noises with their fighting and mating. Most feral cat problems are as a result of humans feeding them.
  • Stray cats also hunt and kill local wildlife, such as songbirds, and can overtake other native wildlife, and cause them disease. Cat-Scratch fever and rabies are the main two diseases carried by these cats, but there’s the usual host of parasite and fecal matter diseases that any wildlife in overcrowded conditions can cause. These cats are sometimes dangerous and have been known to attack humans and other animals.

Dead Animal Removal

  • The primary problem with dead animals, of course, is the odor as it starts to decay. The odor may be slight at first, but after about three days after the death of the animal, the odor can be quite strong.
  • The strength of the odor depends on many factors: size of animal, animal species and location of carcass, state of decomposition, temperature, humidity, and airflow. Oftentimes when a dead animal is removed, it’s covered with parasites such as fleas, mites, or ticks and these organisms can carry and transmit disease.
  •  We at Bates will come out to your home or business to safely and carefully remove and dispose of these carcasses. So call us today!
